Lake Shikotsu is a caldera lake belonging to the Shikotsu-Toya National Park. Shikotsu means “large depression” in Ainu language. With a circumference of about 40 km and a maximum depth of about 360 m, it is an important tourist attraction in Chitose City. It is also known as one of the cleanest lakes in Japan and the northernmost ice-free lake in Japan. Around Lake Shikotsu, there are still beautiful nature such as Lake Okotampe, Moss Cave, Mount Kazafushidake, Mount Eniwa, Mount Tarumae, and other mountains over 1,000 meters high and natural deep forests. There are also boating, camping, scuba diving, canoeing, and various events such as “Lake Shikotsu Water Festival,” “Lake Shikotsu Autumn Foliage Festival,” and “Chitose-Lake Shikotsu Hyobaku Festival” are held.
