Jozankei Onsen

A place famous for its autumn foliage and healing hot springs

The hot springs are located in a naturally beautiful valley covered with virgin forest.
Hot spring water gushes naturally from the cracks in the bedrock on the riverbanks and riverbed.

The hot spring resort is located along the Toyohira River 26 km south of downtown Sapporo, less than an hour’s drive, and is lined with old-fashioned, purely Japanese Meiji-style inns, deluxe hotels, and souvenir stores.

Although the scale of the resort is appropriate for a major hot spring resort, it maintains a quiet environment that is in harmony with nature, allowing visitors to enjoy a relaxing time.

A hot spring resort town where you can feel the atmosphere

In the hot spring resort area, there is a "yukemuri slope" where hot spring steam rises, a "yunotaki (hot spring waterfall)" where hot spring water flows down, and free footbaths and hand baths. In spring, fall, and winter when the temperature is cooler, hot spring smoke rises from the river, creating an atmosphere of a hot spring.

Seasonal Scenery

In spring, you can enjoy fresh greenery, cool summer weather, and beautiful autumn foliage in fall, and in winter, the Jozankei Kogen Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort, which is popular for its large scale and excellent facilities, is nearby.

Jozan Onsen Park

Jozankei Fountainhead Park near the bridge has a "footbath" footbath and "Ontama no Yu" (hot spring of Ontama), which is fed by the fountainhead.

At the "Ontama no Yu" hot spring bath, hot spring water of over 80°C is poured into a hot spring bath tub. Usually, it takes about 20 minutes to make delicious onsen tamago.

Bright red suspension bridge

The bright red suspension bridge "Futami Suspension Bridge" is the symbol of Jozankei.
The bridge overlooks Kappa-fuchi, an abyss with strange rocks and monstrous stones, and Futami Iwa, which is derived from Futamiura (married couple's rock) in Ise.

The nature trail "Futami Sadasan-no Michi" leads to a beautiful spot throughout the four seasons: wildflowers and murmuring snowmelt in spring, cool forest greenery in summer, autumn leaves in brocade, and a quiet winter shrouded in white silver.
On summer nights, the area between Futami Park and Futami Suspension Bridge is illuminated.

Secret hot spring where deer heal wounds

In 1866, a mountain ascetic monk, Jozan Bisen, discovered a hot spring guided by Ainu people after hearing a rumor that there was a secret hot spring where deer heal their wounds.
The area was named "Jozankei" after Jozan, who overcame many difficulties and laid the foundation of the hot spring.

Naturally Gushing Hot Springs

There are 56 sources of Jozankei Onsen, concentrated near Tsukimi-bashi Bridge and Takayama-bashi Bridge on the Toyohira River, which flows through the hot spring resort, and gushing naturally from cracks in the bedrock on the riverbanks and riverbed.

The spring is a clear, colorless, mildly salty sodium chloride spring. The gush rate is 8,600 liters per minute, and the gush temperature is relatively high at 60 to 80 degrees Celsius.

Kappa Hot Springs

The symbol of Jozankei Onsen, the "Kappa Daioh Statue" in Futami Park, a statue of a kappa soaking in an open-air bath in Yunotaki, and "fairy tale kappa statues" created by sculptors from Hokkaido and abroad are placed throughout the hot spring resort area.

The town is associated with the "kappa legend" handed down in Jozankei. The "kappa" character "Kappon" also makes an appearance.
