Located in Nopporo Forest Park, this open-air museum tells the story of Hokkaido’s pioneer days.
In the vast 54-hectare site, historical buildings from the Meiji, Taisho, and early Showa Periods of Hokkaido’s pioneer days have been relocated and restored from all over Hokkaido to recreate scenes of those days.
The site is divided into four areas: urban, rural, mountain, and fishing villages, where visitors can experience the culture, lifestyle, and industries of the pioneer days.
A horse-drawn carriage railroad in summer and a horse-drawn sleigh in winter are recommended. The “Winter Life Experience,” which is available only in winter, gives visitors an insight into the harsh winter lifestyle of the pioneer era.
At the Kaitakunomura Restaurant, visitors can enjoy the famous “Imo-mochi” (sweet potato cake), Tondenbei set menus, Genghis Khan, and other dishes in a spacious restaurant with seating for 120 people.
The old Sapporo Police Station’s Minamiichijo Police Station has also been relocated to the village’s urban area, and is staffed by policemen in their old uniforms.
The village also holds activities such as reenactments of annual events from the pioneer days and activities to pass on the culture of games and traditional skills.
