Hoheikyo Dam

Powerful Dam and Beautiful Autumn Leaves

Completed in 1972, this 102.5-meter-high arched concrete dam can hold about 30 cups of water, enough to fill the Sapporo Dome, and serves as a water source for Sapporo City.

The area around the dam is a scenic spot surrounded by steep rock slopes, and together with the dam’s dynamic sightseeing discharge, it offers a magnificent view.

The lake and the natural beauty of the scenery, centering on the dammed lake named Jozan-ko, are beautiful, and the area is particularly popular for its autumn foliage.

No general vehicles allowed due to environmental protection

Hoheikyo Dam is located in the Shikotsu-Toya National Park, and for environmental protection reasons, general vehicles, motorcycles, and bicycles are prohibited from entering the 2-km distance from the entrance to the dam all year round, so visitors must walk or take an electric bus.

The trail on foot takes about 30 minutes one way from the parking lot to the dam, and the Kudan Falls and various plants can be seen along the way, depending on the season.

Hoheikyo Gorge

There are many places of interest in the Toyohira Gorge, including the restaurant halfway up the mountain, the lift car and observation deck to the observatory, the Kamui Nisei Bridge that crosses the passage above the dam, and the Kudan Falls.
