Lake Toya is the ninth largest lake in Japan and the center of Shikotsu-Toya National Park.
It is an almost circular caldera lake created by a huge volcanic eruption about 110,000 years ago.
There are four islands (Nakajima) formed by volcanic eruptions in Lake Toya, and Oshima, the largest island, can be reached by a sightseeing boat.
On the southwestern shore is a forest of Toyako Onsen hot spring inns and hotels, which serve as a base for buses and sightseeing boats.
It is registered as a Japan Geopark and a World Geopark, and has been selected as one of the “100 Best Views in Japan” and “100 Best New Travel Destinations in Japan.
Showa Shinzan, Mt. Usu, and Mt. Yotei in the distance. The scenic beauty of the mountains and lake is one of the three most beautiful sights in Hokkaido.
