Sounkyo Gorge

A grand canyon where you can experience the magnificent nature

Sounkyo is one of the largest gorges in Japan, created by the Ishikari River carving out the northern foothills of Daisetsuzan.
The Ishikari River is flanked by cliffs of columnar joints, oddly shaped rocks, and waterfalls that stretch for about 24 km.

At the foot of Mt. Daisetsuzan Kurodake is the hot spring resort of Sounkyo Onsen, one of the largest in Hokkaido, with a number of large hotels and other facilities.

Large Boxes and Small Boxes

The cliffs of columnar joints, about 200 meters high, can be seen up close and are very powerful.
The cliffs were formed when the Ishikari River eroded the fused tuff that was deposited by the eruption of Daisetsuzan about 30,000 years ago.

Meteor Falls and Ginga Falls

These two waterfalls have been selected as one of the 100 best waterfalls in Japan. These two waterfalls are also known as "Husband and Wife Falls" because they fall close together.

Meteor Falls is also called Otaki Falls because of the strength of the single, thick line of water that flows down the steep, high cliff. The waterfall drops 90 meters and falls straight down.

Ginga-no-taki Falls is also called Female Falls because of the graceful grace of its gracefully flowing body that looks like a white thread hanging from the end of the water. The waterfall is 104 meters in height and has a branch fall.

A parking lot is located near the falls, where visitors can enjoy a close view of the two waterfalls.
From the "Soubakudai" observation platform, about 20 minutes up the slope behind the parking lot, you can see the two waterfalls flowing down at the same time.

Taisetsu Kurodake

Kurodake ropeway from the hot spring resort at the foot of the mountain takes you to the halfway point of Mt.

It takes about an hour to climb to the top from there.
Visitors can enjoy not only the magnificent view, but also alpine flora, autumn foliage in fall, and skiing in winter, as well as mountain scenery in each of the four seasons.

Sounkyo Hot Spring

Sounkyo Onsen is a hot spring located at the entrance of Sounkyo, and the central part of the hot spring resort area has been developed as a canyon mall modeled after a Canadian mountain resort, creating a Western-style atmosphere.
