Hagoromo Falls

Magnificent and spectacular waterfall falling in seven stages

Located in Tenninkyo in Daisetsuzan National Park, Hagoromo Falls is the highest waterfall in Hokkaido, falling in seven stages from a precipitous cliff 270 meters high.

It is said that the name “Hagoromo Falls” was given to the waterfall because of its spectacular scenery and the fact that the flow of water reminds one of a robe of feathers.

The falls can be viewed from April, when the snow melts, to November, when the snow falls.
It was selected as one of the 100 best waterfalls in Japan.

Falling down a precipitous cliff while refracting

This waterfall spans the Aishipop and Futami streams, which are tributaries of the Chubetsu River, and the two streams merge in the middle of the seven-stage waterfall.

The geology of the waterfall is composed of fused tuff in the upper part, pumiceous tuff in the middle part, and Tertiary volcanic rock in the lower part. The change in erosion caused by the different geological conditions results in a complex flow of water refracting down the cliff in seven stages, giving it a unique flavor.

Waterfall Viewing Spots

The Hagoromo Falls can be seen from the Hagoromo Observatory, located about 500 meters (about 15 minutes) from Tenninkyo Onsen, one of the trailheads to Daisetsuzan, where a walking trail to the falls from the hot spring resort area has been developed.

The Taki Mimidai trail climbs about 1.5 km (1 to 1.5 hours) from Tenninkyo Onsen on a trail with a height difference of about 230 meters, and from the Taki Mimidai you can see a panoramic view of Hagoromo Falls, Asahidake Mountain and Shikishima Falls.
