Yunokawa Onsen

The closest hot spring resort to the airport in Japan

Conveniently located 5 minutes by car (3 km) from Hakodate Airport, and just a short walk from the Hakodate City Tram “Yunokawa Onsen”, Yunokawa Onsen is one of Hokkaido’s most enjoyable hot springs with a long history.

The hot spring resort town is lined with inns and hotels located along the coast, from which you can view the Shimokita and Tsugaru Peninsulas and, at night, fishing fires.

Fresh seafood from the Tsugaru Straits, such as sea urchin, squid, hairy crabs, and scallops, is one of the delights that adorn the dining table.

The spring is a sodium calcium chloride spring. The spring was opened in 1653.
It is said that it was discovered when the son of the lord of the Matsumae Clan fell ill and looked for a place to recuperate from his illness.

Famous Hot Springs for Medical Treatment

Yunokawa Onsen is one of the three most famous hot springs in Hokkaido, along with Noboribetsu Onsen and Jozankei Onsen, and has been selected as one of the 100 best hot springs in Hokkaido.

In the old days, it was known as a therapeutic hot spring for medical treatment, and during the Hakodate War, wounded soldiers of the former shogunate army were treated here.
