Trappistine Monastery

Founded in 1898 as Japan’s first convent for women. Also called Angel Garden.
The impressive cathedral, with its brick exterior and semicircular arched windows, is a mixture of Gothic and Romanesque design, and was reconstructed in 1927.

The nuns still live a self-sufficient communal life under strict precepts, focusing on prayer, labor, and sacred reading.

Men are not allowed inside the convent, but are allowed to enter the public areas.
Visitors can tour the vestibule and the archive room attached to the store, which provides information on life in the monastery and the history of the monastery.

The store is famous for its madalena (madeleines) and cookies, which are sold as souvenirs and are well-known as Hakodate gifts.
