Seikan Ferry Memorial Museum Mashumaru

A museum dedicated to the ship that once linked the Tsugaru Straits

The elegant hull of this museum ship was once known as the “Queen of the Straits.
The ship sailed until 1988, when the Seikan Tunnel was opened to traffic.

The ship’s wheelhouse and other facilities are open to the public, and the ship’s logbook and other valuable documents are on display.

The Seikan Liaison Ship

From 1908 to 1988, the Seikan Liaison Ship connected Aomori Station, the end of the railroad line in Honshu, to Hakodate Station in Hokkaido, across the Tsugaru Straits.

The Seikan Tunnel, an undersea tunnel under the Tsugaru Straits, was completed in 1988 after 24 years of construction, ending its role.

Mashu Maru: Inside the Ship

Inside the ship, there is a recreation of the wheelhouse and radio room where the captain commanded the ship, as it was when the ship was in service.
The ship's wheelhouse and radio room, where the captain commanded the ship, are reproduced exactly as they were when the ship was in service, as well as other rare documents that tell the long history of the Seikan Liaison Ship.
