Kitaichi Glass Sangokan is a reused wooden stone warehouse built in the Meiji era (1891) as a fishing warehouse, and houses Kitaichi Glass’s glass store and café, one of several in Otaru City.
Located in the city center, about a 7 or 8-minute walk to the Otaru Canal, the glass stores include the “Japanese Floor” with Japanese glass, the “Western Floor” with exotic glass and stained glass, and the “Country Floor” with casual style in the colors of Mother Nature.
Upon entering the building, visitors will find a passageway that retains the rails on which cargo trolleys used to run when the building was used as a warehouse, and then they will enter the hall.
Except for a few indirect lights, the entire hall is illuminated by 167 oil lamps, and the light from the lamps and the quiet music that floats in the dimly lit hall create a very calm and pleasant mood.
The hall is equipped with a Steinway, a famous piano instrument, and hosts live music performances.
If you visit during the opening hours, you can observe the lighting of 167 oil lamps, which takes place every morning, and enjoy the fantastic atmosphere.
